Dubai: The UAE on Friday strongly condemned the web posting of a film that is offending to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and Muslims worldwide.
Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, denounced in a statement Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders' insistence to post the film, titled Fitnah (meaning discord in Arabic), on the internet.
Shaikh Abdullah stressed the need to respect the religions and beliefs of others, and not to use freedom of expression as a pretext to offend people and provoke anger and alienation.
He called on Muslims and Islamic nations to practice self-control and respond to this provocation with restraint. He also thanked United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon for condemning the offensive film.
Earlier, Muslim nations, the European Union and the UN chief expressed outrage at the anti-Islam film, while Iran and Bangladesh warned the film could have grave consequences and Pakistan protested to the Dutch ambassador.
The 57-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) warned that the film aimed to provoke unrest and caused "insult to the 1.3 billion Muslims in the world."
The chief imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Shaikh Abdul Rahman Al Sudais, denounced what he called "a blow to the (Muslim) nation," although he did not mention the film by name.
The film was posted on the internet on Thursday, sparking immediate anger. "I condemn in the strongest terms the airing of Geert Wilders' offensively anti-Islamic film," the UN chief said in a statement. "There is no justification for hate speech or incitement to violence. The right of free speech is not at stake here."
The Dutch government has distanced itself from Wilders' film. "The film equates Islam with violence. We reject that interpretation," Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said.
