TOUCH OF HARMONY 2008



(A Joint Project of Jamiyah Singapore and The New York University, USA)


Mission

To promote harmony and peace among peoples of different faiths and races at both local and global level. This is expected to be accomplished by providing opportunities to students and young people from institution of higher learning to come into contact with one another under a common programme of short duration for promoting peace and harmony in the multi-racial and multi-faith global environment.

Vision

It is envisaged that the project will provide a platform for exchange of talents, skills and resources for experiencing inter racial, inter faith and inter ethnic interaction for promoting goodwill and harmony among our young students who are the architects of our society in future.

Objectives for TOH IV

The objectives of Touch of Harmony are:

1. To provide opportunities for the young people across the globe to experience and promote inter faith, inter racial and inter ethnic goodwill and understanding.

2. To provide an educational experience for the younger generation coming from different socio, cultural and ethnic background to interact in a different environment and thus widening their knowledge, understanding and values pertain to different faiths, races and ethnicities.

3. To provide opportunities for young talents from different nations to gain the pleasure of serving the needy and disadvantaged in their respective communities.

4. To provide the opportunity in planning, organizing, and managing community service and inter faith programmes and services in a socio-cultural environment different from their own, and

5. To promote a global awareness and understanding on the importance of ‘GOING GREEN’. Students will participate in the activities that will open their minds and hearts to our mother earth.

The participants are made up of 4 tertiary students from various universities and faculties.

The accompanying chaperones for Touch Of Harmony Program this year will be:-

• Mdm Faridah Ajis
Diploma in Early Childhood Education
Principal, Jamiyah Child Care Centre.

The duration of the program is 7th of July 2008 till the 21st of July 2008.

Under this programme the participant students were given the chance to learn about the different cultures in New York City and were able to show and portray their own Singaporean culture to the students of New York University. They were living in an NYU dorm together with students from different nationalities. They mingled and helped students in their school work and also had fun discussing about global issues in the Global Youth Forum.

The program gives the students the opportunity of living their passion. Ms. Theivambigai was given the opportunity to work with children in a day care centre for 2 days and even taken the children out to Central Park Zoo. Mr. Thohir was given the opportunity to be an employee of the Bank of New York for a day. These are just some of the priceless opportunities that touch the lives of these young adults. They also had the opportunity of having a tea meeting with Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the UN Mr. Vanu Gopala Menon at New York.

Touch of Harmony seeks to expand this program to promote the message of peace and harmony in a global setting.

The Press conference was Chaired by Mr. Eduardo Ramose Gomez , Managing Partner of Duanne Morris (formerly Mexican Ambassador to Singapore). Mr. Abu Bakar Maidin, President of Jamiyah , Mr. Nalla , CEO of Hindu Endowments Board and Ms Madhu Bala from the Hindu Advisory Board were present at the Press Conference.

Participant students gave a pictorial presentation of their New York experience under the Touch of Harmony Programme. Mr. Mohd Hosni Abdul Malik, Chief Chaperon of Touch of Harmony team introduced the participants to the press.
