PRESS RELEASE

A high level Civil Society delegation from India is currently on a visit to Saudi Arabia. The delegation is sponsored by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and is led by Mr. Syed Shahid Mahdi, Vice President of ICCR. The delegation comprises of Mr. P.K. Abdul Aziz, Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University; Mr. Anwar Moazzam, Islamic Scholar, Academician, Writer and Director (Honorary), Urdu Documentation Centre, Hyderabad; Mr. A.C. Patankar, Adviser, Confederation of Indian Industry; Mrs. Rakhshanda Jalil – Coordinator, Media and Culture, Jamia Milia Islamia; and Ms. Mita Vasisht – Indian television, film and theatre actress, and founder of Mandala, Space for arts, collaborations, research and education.

During the visit, the delegation will interact extensively with the Saudi Civil Society. The delegation is also expected to call on the Deputy Minister of Information & Culture, Dr. Abu Baker Bagader and is scheduled to visit Jeddah Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Dar-Al-Hekma Women University, Islamic Development Bank, National Commercial Bank, International Medical Centre etc. Saudi-India Friendship Society will be hosting a reception in honour of the delegation. The delegation will also participate in a ‘Panel Discussion’ on 30th April where some of the Saudi speakers would also be participating.

The visit is another opportunity for diversifying and strengthening India-Saudi relations, in light of the high level visits that have been exchanged between the two countries in the past few years. The visit of the delegation is also a follow up to the Saudi Civil Society delegation which visited India on the sidelines of the Royal visit in January 2006.
